The basis of the Adumbral
The word Adumbral is an old english word, meaning dark secret. Replaced in modern times by the words it represents, the legacy behind it empowers so much more. The story of the Adumbral Empire is a lengthy one told differently by many different people, however how it started never changes. In the beginning there was one supreme being, one creator. He created minor gods and goddesses, who created lessor gods and goddesses, until eventually, the power of the divine was no longer. Vita and Mors were the first goddesses to be born without the power to control the divine, they could not make divine servants, so they turned to the possibility of a material world, with material beings. Their power barely allowed them to scrape this possibility, but they decided to combine forces, the goddess of darkness and death, Mors and the goddess of enlightenment and creation Vita worked together to craft the center of magic, the Adumbral.

Using the power of the Adumbral, Vita and Mors crafted the material universe, stretching the Adumbral out to connect to each planet, pumping magic and the possibility of life into each. In several days of hard work, the universe began to form, first created were the Angels, directly bound to service to each of the goddesses, followed by the dragons who guarded their possessions, the chain continued, Mors would create a dark species of dragon bound to her, vita would create a species of light to counter it, however eventually with the creation of humanity Vita disturbed the balance. She created a race she did not hold direct control over, a race bound only by themselves and their morale's, a race that could not only be matched, but taken.

Bound by rules and agreements, Mors was unable to effect humanity directly, but the fear pushed into them by her minions was enough to sway many, but it was not long before Vita offered them sanctum under her shrines. Mors took her highest archangel and imprisoned his essence in a sword, a tool of power no human could resist. It was not long before it was found, and the cataclysm that followed may never be matched. The sword became called SoulRender, and using a human host not even Vita's sanctuary was able to fend it off. Mors used Humanities freedom to bind them to her.
Angelic Wrath and the rise of the Aphotic Empire
Things were looking very grim when vita finally agreed to sacrifice her own archangel to create a counter sword, to protect and keep laws and order amongst humanity. The counter sword was called Angelic Wrath, and used Justice and Order to gather humanity under government and battle the Chaos of Soulrender. However, Angelic Wrath too had a flaw, Humans were not as perfect as Angels, and it's expectations were unrealistic. The Host of Angelic Wrath became almost as feared as Soulrender, putting people to death for petty crimes, and seeing the law as black and white. Humanity was losing hope, and most had no choice but to flock to one side or the other, Humanity was torn while the other races Fought under the swords.

Eventually however, Soulrender found the gateway to the ancient Adumbral. The Goddesses could not create divine, and so the gateway into the Adumbral was too physical. Soulrender quickly brought it's armies into the mystic and thriving tunnels of the Adumbral, seeking it's center, the center of magic. Soulrender knew the purpose of the Adumbral, and knew if the center could be reached and controlled then a power greater than either goddesses would come to be. Soulrender's Host moved from world to world, conquering, slaughtering, and terrorizing bringing more and more under his rule. The Empire came to be known as the Aphotic Empire or the Empire to bring about the absence of light. The Aphotic Empire grew exponentially as Soulrender penetrated the Adumbral, and the goddesses realized they were no longer in control.

Angelic Wrath penetrated the Adumbral as well, looking for the power before Soulrender achieved it, the Xenids, the biological killing machines that protected the interior of the Adumbral were not enough to protect it, and the Adumbral itself writhed in pain. Using it's directed energy, the Adumbral itself prepared to use it's power to create a third goddess, to protect it, This goddess, born of material creating the divine, was Celest, goddess of balance and war. Celest had little power over Soulrender, but crafted a third sword, a sword to balance out the other two, Adumbral Bane.
